Why Marine Vibration Isolation Matters
Engine and auxiliary vibration that is not isolated wears shipboard machinery. Resonant coupling between main propulsion diesels, shaft lines and hull structure accelerates bearing wear, cracks cast brackets, fatigues piping and shortens the service life of electronics. Vibration on main engine seatings, auxiliary genset frames and HVAC package units is also a common point of attention at class surveys.
Hicool’s rubber-metal shock absorbers have natural frequencies of 7 to 17 Hz across the range, which places the rigid-body modes of the mounted machine well below typical diesel firing, propeller shaft and compressor frequencies. Damping ratios of 0.08 to 0.12 on the main engine and genset series limit resonant build-up during speed sweeps and transient load changes. The result: lower vibration and noise on deck and longer equipment life.

Fail-safe Captive Design — Why It Matters
Some classification rules and engine makers require resilient mounts under main or safety-critical machinery to be captive: if the rubber element fails, the machinery stays mechanically retained to its seating. Requirements differ by society, machinery type and vessel.
If your project requires captive mounts, state it in the enquiry together with the classification society. Hicool confirms which models meet the requirement against the manufacturer’s approval drawing and certificate scope before quotation.
Typical Applications
- Main propulsion diesel engines — 4135 / 6135 / TBD234-class high-speed diesels and other power machinery
- Marine auxiliary generators — diesel generator sets, including small sets of 2–10 kW
- Marine HVAC packages — compressors, blowers, chilled-water pumps
- Refrigeration compressors — refrigeration and air-conditioning plant
- Engineering machinery — construction and engineering machinery
- Marine control panels — switchboards, cabinets and small control panels
- Pumps and fans — pump sets, fans and blowers
- Instruments and electronics — instruments, electronic units and light equipment

- Class certificates — CCS type approval held by the manufacturer for selected product families; CCS, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA or RS certificates supplied by the manufacturer as required by class and passed to the buyer with the goods
- Documentation — the manufacturer’s class certificates as required by the vessel’s class; product drawings with outline, hole pattern, thread and rated load on request
Fleet & Installation Record (Desensitized)
The manufacturer’s mounts are supplied to Chinese shipyards, diesel engine builders and construction-machinery manufacturers, and as spares for vessels and machinery already in service. Legacy profiles such as SH sandwich mounts (151-B designations) and T-series spring mounts to CB 390-76 remain in production for replacement.
How to Select the Right Mount
- Calculate load per mount. Total equipment wet weight ÷ number of mounting points (typically 4 or 6).
- Determine operating frequency. Engine: RPM ÷ 60 × cylinders × 0.5 for 4-stroke, ×1 for 2-stroke. Pumps and fans: shaft RPM ÷ 60.
- Target isolation efficiency. For >85% isolation, mount natural frequency should be 1/3 to 1/4 of lowest disturbance frequency.
- Check deflection and axes. Confirm the deflection at rated load suits shaft, coupling and pipe alignment; bracket mounts (EA, E, BE) list separate vertical and horizontal ratings.
- Match mounting dimensions. Check base footprint, hole pattern and centre thread against the seating; state the thread where a series offers alternatives.
- Captive requirement. Where class rules or the engine maker require captive (fail-safe) mounts, state it in the enquiry; Hicool confirms matching models against the manufacturer’s approval drawing.
- Classification approval. Confirm the class required (CCS, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA or RS) per flag state and newbuilding specification.
- Contact Hicool. Submit a selection inquiry with equipment weight, RPM, disturbance frequency, ambient conditions, and classification requirement. Hicool returns a sized proposal with the matching models and documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I select the right shock absorber for my marine engine?
Start with static load per mount (wet equipment weight divided by mount count, typically 4 or 6). Identify the primary disturbance frequency — for a 4-stroke, 6-cylinder diesel at 1,500 RPM, firing frequency is 75 Hz. Choose a mount whose natural frequency is below 25 Hz to achieve at least 85 percent isolation. Cross-check against operating temperature, oil exposure, and classification society requirements, and state in the enquiry whether captive mounts are required. Send your equipment datasheet to Hicool for a matched proposal.
What is the difference between EA, DJ, and ZA series?
EA is a bracket mount rated 25 to 400 kg vertically, with separate ratings in the longitudinal and transverse directions, for main and auxiliary diesels and gensets. DJ is a shear-type mount for 200 to 400 kgf with a natural frequency of 7.0 Hz and a damping ratio of 0.085, used under 4135, 6135 and TBD234-class high-speed diesels; the manufacturer’s test data show isolation above 90 percent and noise reduction above 30 dB. ZA is a cup-housing mount in three sizes covering 80 to 1,200 kg, with natural frequencies of about 8 to 15 Hz across the load bands, for gensets and auxiliary engines.
Do you provide CCS certificates with the mounts?
Yes. For product families holding current CCS type approval, the manufacturer’s CCS certificate is supplied with the goods. Certificates for BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA or RS are supplied by the manufacturer on request. Class approval is issued by product type and model, so Hicool confirms the certificate scope against the models ordered before quotation.
What load range and natural frequency does each series cover?
Rated load per mount runs from 0.45 kg (B reinforced instrument mounts) to 2,200 kg (SH sandwich plate mounts). Most cup-housing and conical series have natural frequencies between 7 and 15 Hz across their load bands; the B series is rated at 15 ± 2 Hz and the DM mount at 15 to 17 Hz. Each series table lists the load band, deflection at rated load and natural frequency where the manufacturer publishes it.
What is the MOQ and typical lead time?
Minimum order quantity and lead time depend on the series, the load band and whether class certificates are required. Hicool confirms both with the manufacturer for each enquiry and states them in the quotation.
Can you supply spare mounts for legacy pre-2015 installations?
Yes. The manufacturer still produces legacy profiles, including SH double-plate mounts with their 151-B designations and T-series spring mounts to the CB 390-76 ship standard. For a replacement, send the marking on the old mount, a photo with a scale, the outline dimensions and thread, or the model of the machine it carries, and Hicool matches it to a current model.
How often should marine shock absorbers be replaced?
Service life depends on load, temperature, oil exposure and duty cycle. Replace a mount if inspection shows cracks through the rubber, a permanent set that changes machine alignment, oil or fuel softening of the rubber, or loss of bond between rubber and metal. Follow the inspection intervals set by the vessel’s classification society and the engine maker. Hicool can supply a matching replacement from the marking or outline dimensions of the mount in service.
Do you recommend fail-safe mounts for main engines above 500 kW?
Requirements for captive (fail-safe) mounts are set by the classification society and the engine maker, and differ by society and installation. If your project requires captive mounts, state it in the enquiry with the classification society; Hicool confirms which models meet the requirement against the manufacturer’s approval drawing and certificate scope.
Are these mounts suitable for tropical and high-temperature service?
Operating temperature ranges are published per series: −45 to +70 °C for ZAB, KT, KT-49J, DC and ZH-38; −40 to +70 °C for ZA; −40 to +80 °C for the B reinforced series; −40 to +60 °C for ZH-46; −20 to +70 °C for DM. For locations near turbochargers or exhaust manifolds, state the expected temperature in the enquiry so Hicool can confirm a suitable model with the manufacturer.
Can you provide DXF or STEP drawings for design integration?
Product drawings with outline, mounting-hole pattern, thread and rated load are available on request for the models ordered or under evaluation. Contact Hicool with the models and the drawing format you need, and we confirm what the manufacturer can supply.
