75m Offshore Supply Vessel — Marine HVAC System with ABS Certification
Table of Contents
Project Overview
A Gulf of Mexico offshore supply vessel (OSV) operator needed a complete HVAC system replacement during a scheduled 30-day yard period. The vessel operates year-round in Gulf conditions (high humidity, salt spray) and requires ABS + USCG certification for US-flag operations. The system serves bridge, accommodation (42 berths), galley, and engine control room.
The Challenge
US-flag vessels require both ABS classification and USCG subchapter I compliance for HVAC systems. The USCG requires all accommodation ventilation to maintain positive pressure relative to adjacent spaces, and all ductwork penetrating fire boundaries must have automatic fire dampers per 46 CFR 116.610. The tropical Gulf climate demands high dehumidification capacity alongside cooling.
Our Solution
We supplied a central HVAC package: 2 custom air handling units (AHUs) for the main zones plus 16 fan coil units (FCUs) for individual cabins. AHUs were built with marine-grade aluminum casings, copper-nickel cooling coils for seawater resistance, and HEPA-grade pre-filters for engine room intake protection.
OSV Pacific Valor — HVAC Package
- Central AHU2 × 120 kW cooling, 40 kW heating
- Fan Coil Units16 × Ducted ceiling type
- Total Cooling320 kW (91 RT)
- Zones ServedBridge, 42 cabins, galley, ECR
- Coil MaterialCuNi 90-10 (seawater compatible)
- Fan MotorIP56 marine-duty, 440V/60Hz/3Ph
Results
- System commissioned within the 30-day yard window
- ABS + USCG dual approval achieved
- Dehumidification: maintained 55% RH in 95% ambient conditions
- Crew feedback: measurable noise reduction in cabin areas (52 dBA vs. 61 dBA old system)
