FPSO Offshore Platform — Ammonia Refrigeration System Air Coolers
Table of Contents
Project Overview
A major EPC contractor required ammonia-compatible air coolers for the refrigeration system aboard an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) unit destined for operations offshore Brazil. The system serves both process cooling and provisions storage, requiring explosion-proof ratings for Zone 2 hazardous areas.
The Challenge
Ammonia (R717) refrigeration on offshore platforms presents unique challenges: the coolers must withstand corrosive marine atmosphere, comply with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU for hazardous areas, and carry DNV type approval for the vessel classification. The hot-dip galvanized coating was essential for ammonia compatibility — standard copper fins would corrode within months.
Our Solution
We sourced DDF-150 series hot-dip zinc ammonia air coolers from our partner factory in Shandong. These units feature all-aluminum fin construction with hot-dip galvanized steel frames, purpose-built for ammonia systems in marine environments.
