Sourcing Class-Approved Anchor Windlasses Without the Lead Time Headache?

Shipyards and vessel operators need anchor windlasses that arrive on schedule, pass class survey on the first attempt, and fit the chain locker arrangement already in the drawings. Delays or certification rejections can hold up an entire vessel delivery. hicool supplies electric and hydraulic anchor windlasses from established Chinese manufacturers holding CCS, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA or RS type approval — delivered in 30–60 days with full documentation packages ready for class submission.

Marine Anchor Windlasses — Electric & Hydraulic, Class-Approved

Our anchor windlass catalogue covers 13 product configurations spanning chain diameters from 12 mm to 120 mm, suitable for vessels ranging from small coastal craft to large bulk carriers and offshore support vessels. Both electric (AC motor with band brake) and hydraulic (axial piston pump with automatic brake) drive types are available, with vertical or horizontal drum orientation to match your forecastle arrangement.

All units are designed and manufactured to classification society rules (CCS, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA or RS) and are supplied with the manufacturer’s certificate for the society your project requires. Chain wheels are manufactured to match the exact chain grade and link geometry — Grade 2 (AM2) and Grade 3 (AM3) stud-link chain per IACS standards. Wildcat pockets are CNC-machined for smooth chain engagement without jamming.

Typical customers include shipyards building bulk carriers, container vessels, tankers, offshore supply vessels, fishing vessels, and river/coastal cargo ships. We also supply replacement windlasses for vessels in drydock upgrading or replacing aging equipment.

Product Range Overview

Type Chain Dia. Range Drive Typical Vessel FOB Range (USD)
Vertical Electric 12–42 mm AC Motor Coastal cargo, fishing 5,000–20,000
Horizontal Electric 30–78 mm AC Motor Bulk carrier, container 15,000–45,000
Vertical Hydraulic 22–56 mm Hydraulic OSV, tug, yacht 12,000–35,000
Horizontal Hydraulic 46–120 mm Hydraulic Large bulk, tanker, FPSO 30,000–80,000
Combined Windlass-Mooring 34–78 mm Electric/Hydraulic Multi-purpose cargo 18,000–55,000

Electric vs Hydraulic Windlass — Which Do You Need?

Feature Electric Hydraulic
Best For Standard merchant vessels OSV, tugs, vessels needing variable speed
Speed Control Fixed speed (multi-speed optional) Infinitely variable
Maintenance Lower (fewer fluid connections) Requires HPU maintenance
Deck Space Motor mounted on windlass HPU can be located below deck
Cost Lower for ≤78 mm chain More economical for >78 mm chain
Overload Protection Thermal + current limit Relief valve (inherent)

Rule of thumb: Electric for standard merchant vessels up to 78 mm chain where simplicity and lower maintenance matter. Hydraulic for larger chains, offshore vessels, or any application requiring precise speed control and high duty cycles.

Common Applications

  • Newbuilding projects at shipyards — bulk carriers, tankers, container vessels
  • Offshore support vessel (OSV) and platform supply vessel (PSV) newbuilds
  • Drydock replacement of aging or class-expired windlasses
  • Fishing vessel fleet upgrades (12–34 mm chain range)
  • River and coastal cargo vessel construction

Recent Supply Example

A shipyard in Turkey ordered 2 × horizontal electric anchor windlasses for a 38,000 DWT bulk carrier, 58 mm Grade 3 chain. Units included CCS and BV dual-class certification, bridge remote control panels, and chain counters. Delivered FOB Shanghai within 45 days at approximately USD 32,000 per unit. Total project value: ~USD 64,000.

Windlass Selection Guide

1

Start from Equipment Number

Your vessel's Equipment Number (EN) from class rules determines the required chain caliber, anchor weight, and windlass capacity. Confirm EN with your naval architect or class surveyor.

2

Choose Drive Type

Electric for standard cargo vessels (simpler, lower cost). Hydraulic for offshore/AHTS (better overload capacity). Combined windlass-mooring if deck space is limited.

3

Specify Classification

Different class societies require different documentation. CCS is standard for Chinese-built vessels. BV/ABS/DNV/LR/NK/KR/RINA/RS for international orders. Dual class adds 10-15% to cost/time.

4

Confirm GA Integration

Windlass foundation must match the deck structure. We provide GA drawings early for yard approval before manufacturing starts, avoiding costly rework.

Frequently Asked Questions

30-50% below MacGregor, Rolls-Royce, or Kongsberg for equivalent specifications and same class approval. The savings are larger on standard configurations (bulk carrier, tanker) and smaller on highly customized AHTS units. We provide side-by-side specification comparisons on request.
Our windlass manufacturers hold type approvals from CCS, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, NK, KR, RINA and RS. The specific approval depends on the manufacturer and model range. We confirm exact certificate numbers and validity dates with each quotation.
Every windlass undergoes: (1) no-load running test; (2) rated load test at rated speed; (3) overload test at 1.5× rated load; (4) brake holding test at 1.5× rated load; (5) emergency stop test. All witnessed by class surveyor. Test certificate, GA drawing, O&M manual, and spare parts list included.
60-90 days for standard electric windlasses. 75-120 days for hydraulic or customized configurations. Combined windlass-mooring units: 90-120 days. These are from order confirmation with deposit payment.
